From Agricultural Waste to Reliable Mycelium Packaging

In the early days of S.Lab, we focused on proving that mycelium material can meet the demands of real manufacturing.
We developed a fully automated production line with computer vision and robotic systems that let mycelium grow with the same precision as traditional materials.

The result is biodegradable packaging made from agricultural waste and mycelium that stays consistent in quality, performs like a polystyrene alternative, and composts within 30 days.

The real problem: logistics of sustainable packaging supply chain

Once we scaled, we uncovered a big insight.
Producing green materials is only half of the story. Transporting them across countries creates high emissions and adds cost. Long supply chains erase a significant part of the environmental benefit.

This is especially true for bulky packaging like polystyrene alternatives. Even the best biodegradable packaging becomes less sustainable if it travels thousands of kilometers.

The Answer: local, automated mini-factories

To solve this, our CTO Eugene Tomilin developed a new direction for S.Lab: containerised production.

These mycelium mini-factories are 40-foot units that operate as standalone production sites. Each one will be able to produce up to 15,000 mycelium packaging units per month, directly at or near a client’s facility.

It changes the sustainable packaging supply chain in three ways:

  • Local production cuts transport emissions
  • Automated systems ensure stable output
  • Circular use of materials keeps the footprint low

This model allows companies to integrate compostable packaging without reorganizing their logistics or adding new bottlenecks.
