What is mycelium?
Mycelium is a part of fungi that’s growing underground. It’s technically mushroom roots, while what we see above ground is mushroom body. Mycelium is made up of tiny, thread-like fibers that grow like a spider net creating a big interconnected network that has no size limit. These fast-growing threads are what make mycelium a perfect component for sustainable packaging material. It acts like a fully natural glue, keeping the main material together.
It only takes about five days for mycelium to grow into packaging, and after use, it breaks down completely in about 30 days, leaving no waste behind.
Why agricultural waste?
When we say agricultural waste, we mean plant stems that are left from textile and other fibers production. They are rich in cellulose and other components that make them an ideal base for biodegradable packaging. Now we mostly use hemp leftovers that are sourced locally from farmers in Spain and Portugal, as hemp has the strongest fibers around. But it’s not the only material we can work with – we also use other natural by-products to make packaging, from linen to tea tree leftovers.
We support the circular economy by turning farming waste to useful products and paying farmers for material that otherwise would go unused. It’s about taking from nature responsibly and giving back, supporting local agriculture and sustainable business practices.
