Innovative approach to packaging production.

Enabling a global shift towards sustainable packaging practices.

Biodegradable packaging that protects your products and the planet.

To produce sustainable packaging, we have developed an innovative patented technology that features an efficient and automated production process of bio-packaging. Unlike conventional bio-based production, which relies on multiple non-interconnected machines and stages, our system integrates automation and efficiency from end to end.

Our innovation.

Scalability: We can adapt to market fluctuations and provide packaging solutions for various clients, from SMB
to large corporations.

Automated production: Producing packaging on an industrial scale using our patented technology.

No Molds: Our packaging is not a material pressed into molds, it grows by itself into
a shape prepared by a specifically designed robot. Any shape or form is possible.

Patented technology: Our manufacturing process is secured with 5 patents.

Our solution

To tackle the problem of the pollution of polystyrene packaging and the lack of alternative scalable, eco-friendly solutions and processes, S.Lab has pioneered a groundbreaking and proprietary process to produce mycelium-based packaging at an industrial scale.

The company aims to make its production processes totally carbon-neutral.  Our innovative production process using advanced technology and organic components is a model of sustainability, achieving up to 3 times the energy efficiency of traditional EPS production. It is a closed loop, energy, and water-efficient production. This results in 90% lower CO2 emissions and 90% less water usage than polystyrene production.

S.Lab Packaging

Waterproof (1-3%), thermally insulating (0.05 W/(m²K), fire retardant (B-s1-d0), optimal density (115 kg/m³), high compressive strength (150 kPa), robust bending strength (130 kPa) & soundproof

Polystyrene Packaging

7 kg of CO2 emissions
12 litres water/kg
500 years to degrade
Turns into micro-plastics
Contains potential carcinogens
Waterproof (1-3%), thermally insulating (0.05 W/(m²K), optimal density (25 kg/m³), high compressive strength (50 kPa), robust bending strength (70 kPa) & soundproof

We meet environmental, functional, and industry standards. The company makes its packaging from agricultural waste and mushroom root, using no additives. Our packaging material comprises two essential components: the skeleton and the glue. The skeleton, made from 90% agricultural waste (e.g., hemp and linen straws), is cut into 5mm pieces. The glue, derived from 10% mycelium, forms a resilient network using chitin, a natural adhesive with water resistance and flame-retardant properties. With a biodegradation period of just 30-45 days in soil, our packaging makes polystyrene obsolete with its 500-year degradation time.

This combination ensures robust, functional, and entirely biodegradable packaging designed to prevent any end-of-life impact on landfills. Besides, our solution offers excellent thermal insulation, fire resistance, and waterproofing capabilities (similar to polystyrene features), meeting the highest environmental and functional standards.

It’s a natural replacement for these materials and has application in various industries, like cushioning for beauty and self-care, lodgements for electronics and devices, thermally insulating boxes for food and pharmaceutics, packaging for shoes, clothes, decor, and many others.

To produce such packaging, we have developed an innovative technology (2 EU patents filed, 3 new patents in progress) that features an efficient and automated production process of bio-packaging. Conventional bio-based production involves multiple non-interconnected machines and stages, lacking automation and efficiency. We provide the first continuous, chemical-free sterilization method and an innovative robotic forming mechanism of mycelium-based packaging, solving the main problems related to bio-based solutions’ scalability. The entire manufacturing process is controlled through advanced robotics, sensors, and computer vision, ensuring precision and reducing human error through real-time data monitoring and analysis.

Continuous, Uninterrupted Sterilization Process . S.Lab’s technology enhances the sterilization of agricultural waste using an in-house developed continuous process. Our innovative approach reduces sterilization time dramatically — from 24-28 hours to just 15 minutes — enhancing safety and efficiency compared with conventional mycelium-based manufacturing.

Optimized Primary Growth Chamber – No plastic bags and continuous process . Our technology abandons the traditional mushroom farming model. Instead, S.Lab employs a closed, uninterrupted system. Our process is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces costs significantly. To produce 1,000 kg of packaging, our system uses zero plastic bags, saving approximately 500€ and drastically cutting down on waste.

Innovative Forming and Shaping Mechanism – No mold usage . S.Lab utilizes an automated approach that eliminates the need for individual plastic molds for each packaging unit, expedites the manufacturing process, reduces the lead time for new customer onboarding, and significantly cuts costs associated with mold prototyping and replication.

Superior Design Capabilities – 90% angles in the packaging out of mycelium. Our manufacturing technology is the first to produce mycelium-based packaging with precise 90° angles, mirroring the functionality of conventional packaging. This breakthrough goes beyond limited packaging applications and addresses a broader market, potentially replacing cardboard in various sectors.

Mini-factories are placed in the 40-foot container.   And to go even further and have real exposure of green packaging, we have unlocked scalability with a simple solution where we optimize the production line and fit it to the mini factory placed in a container with external dimensions of 12.19 x2.44 x2.59m (hereinafter referred to as “40-foot container”). Such containers can be set up at the customers’ premises, where the packaging is produced in just a few days. This way, we ensure the availability of natural alternatives around the world.

The first pilot automated production is already operating in Spain
